The thread on the case length gauge is split and spread so that the gauge is a tight fit in the cutter. If the gauge is not a tight fit, it might back out of the cutter without the operator knowing it, affecting the length to which the case would be trimmed. If you use a pliers to hold the gauge make sure you wrap a shop rag around the gauge so you do not scratch it. The gauge is a very close fit in the case mouth, and scratches may make it difficult to get the gauge all the way into the case.
