If the melter is being stored in a basement or some other environment that may have higher humidity, the heating coil will absorb moisture. It is the moisture in the coil that causes the shock. We recommend storing your melter in another location. If you do not have another drier spot to store your melter, then you will need to do the following each time when you want to use it.

Before you plug the melter in, turn the thermostat to the highest setting. After you have adjusted the thermostat, plug the melter in but do not touch it for at least 20 to 30 minutes. This will give the coil time to dry out. After the coil is completely dry, the melter will no longer give you a shock.
